Sunday 9/3
NFL Football (ESPN, CBS, Fox, check local listings): Get ready for some gridiron action. The NFL season opens its season with 14 games, including Tennessee Titans (last year's AFC champs) against the Buffalo Bills. The St. Louis Rams, the defending Super Bowl champs, , play the Denver Broncos Monday night.
Test of Courage: The Making of a Firefighter (PBS, 10-11 p.m., check local listings): Excellent documentary follows aspiring firefighters, men and women of varied ethnic backgrounds, through their rigorous training in Oakland, Calif. Heroic impulses and strength of character make this group unique, and the film heartening.
Monday 9/4
Changing Rooms (BBC America, check local listings): Hip and amusing, this odd-ball design show is about fixing up homes on a small budget. You have to translate pounds to dollars, but the ideas are clever and artful.
Wednesday 9/6
Today (NBC, 7-9 a.m.): New York couple Melanie Nelson and Peter Ginsberg will tie the knot on national television. Hundreds of thousands of viewers chose the couple via the Internet out of four finalists on June 20. Voters also selected the wedding apparel, the cake, the bride's hairdo, even the honeymoon destination, which will be revealed after the ceremony.
The Directors: The Films of John Badham (Encore, 8-9 p.m.): The director began in TV and graduated to "Saturday Night Fever," "WarGames," "Dracula," and "Nick of Time," among others. An entertaining inside look at moviemaking.
Investigative Reports: The Planes that Fell to Earth (A&E, 10-11 p.m.): The series investigates Boeing 737 accidents and tries to find out what caused these planes to go out of control. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated, but questions remain.
Thursday 9/7
MTV Video Music Awards (MTV, 8-11 p.m.): Live from New York's Radio City Music Hall, Shawn and Marlon Wayans will host the 17th-annual ceremony that celebrates the best videos of the year.
Friday 9/8
US Open (CBS, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.): Tennis action continues with women's semifinals and men's double finals.
