Off-duty policeman Ethan Bernardi was out for a drive in his cruiser earlier this month in North Charleston, S.C., when he saw three people in a Volkswagen Jetta passing in the opposite direction . Hmmm, thought Bernardi, that car looks familiar. So he did a U-turn and chased it down, signaling the driver to stop at the curb. He also radioed for backup, and when help arrived the cops arrested everyone for possession of a stolen vehicle . Why did Bernardi think the car was stolen? Because it had been taken from his own home. Said his boss, Chief Jon Zumalt: "One of the advantages to having off-duty officers using patrol cars ... is that they're able to respond to crimes when needed."

The Hollywood adaptation of "The Sound of Music" has arrived at its 40th anniversary. The story of the singing Von Trapp family, first dramatized on Broadway in 1959 with Mary Martin in the lead role, was equally successful on the screen, winning five Oscars and becoming history's third-highest grossing movie, according to tracker Box Office Mojo. In November, Twentieth Century Fox plans to release a two-DVD edition of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic starring Julie Andrews.
