Tuning in: On TV this week.

Monday 7/25

The Dive from Clausen's Pier (Lifetime, 9-11 p.m.) Based on the novel by Ann Packer, this uneven film reaches for something true about the human condition. The story revolves around Carrie Beal (Michelle Trachtenberg) whose fiancé rashly dives into shallow water and injures himself severely. Because Carrie was about to break up with him before the tragedy, she must decide now whether to stay with him out of guilt or leave and pursue her dreams. The acting is believable, the story involving, but the ending is feeble.

Tuesday 7/26

Situation: Comedy (Bravo, back-to-back episodes 8-10 p.m.) Surprisingly engaging, this new reality series offers a contest for the best new comedy series written by newcomers. The scripts have been pared from 10,000 to five, the writers flown to Los Angeles to pitch their stories, and two are chosen. Two 15-minute pilots are produced - both of which will air.

Dirty Jobs (Discovery Channel, 10-10:30 p.m.) Somebody has to ... take out the garbage, recycle used paper, and turn mountains of uneaten food into compost. Host Mike Rowe helps us appreciate the cheerful attitudes and professional pride of those who do.

Wednesday 7/27

Over There (FX, 10-11 p.m.) Two of Hollywood's most incisive, ingenious writer-producers, Steven Bochco and Chris Gerolmo, bring the war in Iraq home. Following the fortunes of one US Army unit, the story takes up the lives of the soldiers' families as well, so that we understand each of these men and women in the context of those who love them. Nothing is glamorized, and the scenes of torture and brutality are difficult to watch. Contains mature themes and strong language.
