After orbiting the Earth for nearly two weeks, astronauts aboard space shuttle Discovery were told to circle the planet for another day as bad weather in Florida forced NASA to delay Monday's scheduled landing. The astronauts had powered up their spacecraft and were awaiting word from Mission Control to fire their braking rockets and head for home when controllers announced early Monday that low clouds over Cape Canav-eral, Fla., would postpone the landing. NASA officials rescheduled the landing for early Tuesday, when they would consider landing sites in California and New Mexico in addition to Florida's Kennedy Space Center.
Suave, Canadian-born broadcaster Peter Jennings, who died Sunday in New York, delivered the news to Americans on ABC each night in five separate decades. He dominated the ratings from the late 1980s to the mid-'90s. Jennings, who announced in April that he'd been diagnosed with lung cancer, became a US citizen in 2003 for family reasons.

The US military has developed war plans to counter terrorist attacks in the US in a shift from the Pentagon's reluctance to engage in domestic operations, The Washington Post reported Monday. Defense officials said the troops would play a supporting role in emergencies, backing up police, firefighters, and other civilian response groups.

Former MVP quarterbacks Dan Marino and Steve Young were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on Sunday. Marino, who spent his entire 17-year career with the Miami Dolphins, holds a number of passing records. Young, who led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl title in 1995, won six NFL passing titles and ran for 43 touchdowns.
