Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, is about a boy and a tiger in a life boat after their ship sank. An allegory, but wonderful fun.

- Sylvia Strain, New York City

I just finished Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer by James L. Swanson. This book deals with the manhunt for Lincoln's assassin and his coconspirators. I didn't realize what a large conspiracy was behind Lincoln's death and the attempted assassination of Secretary of State Seward. Thrilling stuff.

- Jim Reddoch, Portland, Texas

Deepening the American Dream: Reflections on the Inner Life and Spirit of Democracy, a collection of essays edited by Mark Nepo. In these times when it is so easy to slip into deep negativity about the course our nation is taking, this varied collection offers both historical and personal views full of optimism and meaning. I'm likely to reread some of the essays many times.

- Carol Hall, Columbia, S.C.

Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos is a wonderful first novel paralleling stories of young girl and young woman. Beautiful writing.

- Ralph Ashbrook, Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

Why is Christian Science in our name?

Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Here, you’ll find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences – a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.
