New on DVD: 'Breach'

Breach (PG-13)

"Breach," a suspenseful account of the FBI's elaborate sting operation to take down double agent Robert Hanssen, dwells on the traitor's lies and deception. How ironic, then, that the DVD's extras – including a "Dateline" special about the spy – reveal that the film willfully obfuscates the facts of the case. By all accounts, actor Chris Cooper creates an uncanny impression of Hanssen's pendulum swings between casual malevolence in the office and sincere piety as a churchgoer. But whole episodes – including one in which he shoots at the rookie agent assigned to track him – are fictitious. Such admissions undermine the film's impact. Grade: B–
