Take note, animal lovers, of San Fran's humane rating

In San Francisco, pets are often given "equal status as a beloved member of the family," according to Mayor Gavin Newsom. It was an honor, therefore, he said recently, when San Francisco was named America's most humane city among the nation's 25 largest by the Humane Society of the United States. For its inaugural ranking, the society looked at such factors as the number of fur retailers per capita and the ratio of wildlife watchers to hunters. San Francisco scored particularly well for having numerous vegetarian restaurants, pet-friendly hotels, and off-leash dog parks. The cities ranked the most compassionate toward animals using Humane Society criteria:
