"To the End of the Land," by David Grossman (Knopf, 592 pp., $26.95). Grossman, whose own son was killed during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict, creates a searing commentary on war with this story of an Israeli mother who prefers to hike in the Galilee rather than wait at home and perhaps receive news that her son has been slain.
