3. Bartholomew and the Oobleck

I never see this title on anyone else's "favorite childhood book" list so maybe I'm in a minority with my intense affection for the story of Bartholomew and the awful Oobleck that terrorized the Kingdom of Didd. But I well remember finding a tattered copy of this book in a box of second-hand titles that came from my cousins and developing an instant fascination with the idea of sticky green stuff raining down from the sky simply because a bored king made a silly wish. Bartholomew Cubbins seemed so wise a hero to me, finally prevailing upon his foolish monarch to apologize and to grasp that "even kings can't rule the sky."
