Poor Anne of Cleves. She's forever known as the ugly (and even smelly) queen, since the king supposedly looked at her during their first meeting and wasn't impressed. The marriage was never consummated and the "sweet, dull" Anne got sent away to live in obscurity and comfort, as G.J. Meyers writes in the recent and very readable "The Tudors: The Complete Story of England's Most Notorious Dynasty." There's debate, though, about whether Anne was as unattractive or as "dull" as we might assume.
