Westerfeld's four-part "Uglies" series takes place in a world where everyone gets turned from an "Ugly" into a "Pretty" at the age of 16 through a massive series of plastic surgery operations. In this society, prettiness, complacency, and sameness are encouraged as a way of keeping the peace and controlling the population. But young Tally Youngblood rebels, leaving the city to discover outlying communities that don't become "Pretty." This post-apocalyptic tale of oppression is similar to "The Hunger Games" and just as addictive.
