Neal Shusterman's futuristic "Unwind" is set after a second American Civil War – one that was fought between pro-life and pro-choice stalwarts. The novel explores a world where children between the ages of 13 and 18 can be "unwound," or have their organs transplanted to different donors. Lev's too much trouble to his parents, Risa's a ward of the state, and Connor's religious family believes in giving back to society, so all three are destined for unwinding. Shusterman manages to make his story compelling without favoring one side of the pro-life/pro-choice debate over the other.
