The movie which has become a holiday favorite for many was based on the stories from author Jean Shepherd's books, including "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash." The film follows Ralphie Parker and his family through the holiday season, as Ralphie struggles to make the adults around him understand that he wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas, despite his parents' and teacher's warnings that he'll "shoot his eye out." The ugly lamp won by Ralphie's father during the movie is now often sold as a novelty gift and Christmas decoration.
