Anne Carson is a genius, and she’s got the MacArthur Award (not to mention bibliography) to prove it. When she takes a crack at something, she doesn’t miss. Her area of expertise (outside of truly stellar writing) is Greek – language, poetry, and literature. Her new translation of "Antigone" is haunting, vividly compelling, and thrilling. This will make a classics lover out of even the most resistant reader and generate countless new Carson-acolytes. While I haven’t seen a finished copy yet, if the page proofs are any indication, "Antigonick" is bound to be a visual masterpiece as well. (The incredible production value of Carson’s earllier work "Nox" certainly earned New Directions some artistic cred).
