Sontag’s book is a historical romance, weaving the facts about an infamous love triangle together with literary themes of passion, privilege, and destruction. Lady and Lord Hamilton rank highly in The Royal Court of Naples, but Lady Hamilton cuckolds her elderly husband in favor of the embraces of Lord Nelson – referred only to as “the hero.” The truth is that there is no hero in this well-crafted tale of excess.
