Paul McCartney: 40 career highlights on his birthday

On former Beatle Paul McCartney's 70th birthday, here are 40 memorable moments from his musical life.

15. 'Hey Jude' (single, 1968)

Leave it to Paul to take a confused and disheartened young Julian Lennon under his wing at a moment when John and new love Yoko Ono had eyes only for each other. Originally titled "Hey Jules," Cynthia Lennon remembers, "I was truly surprised when, one afternoon, Paul arrived on his own. I was touched by his obvious concern for our welfare.... On the journey down he composed 'Hey Jude' in the car. I will never forget Paul's gesture of care and concern in coming to see us." It spent nine weeks at No. 1 in the US and is one of Paul's many showstoppers in concert.

Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah
