17. 'Live and Let Die' (single, 1973)

Taken on as an assignment by the Bond film's producers, McCartney knocked it off in one day, and recorded the basic track with Wings – a blazing pastiche of traditional John Barry spy genre, reggae (the film is set in the Caribbean), and aural pyrotechnics. It's a total gas and is a McCartney concert highlight, instantly propelling audience members to their feet.

When you were young and your heart was an open book
You used to say live and let live
(You know you did, you know you did you know you did)
But if this ever changing world in which we live in
Makes you give in and cry
Say live and let die
(Live and let die)
Live and let die
(Live and let die)

What does it matter to ya
When you got a job to do
You gotta do it well
You gotta give the other fellow hellllllllll!
