What the authors say: “Comerica’s main entrance is one of the most distinctive in baseball. For our money, it ranks right up there with the colorful plaza in Atlanta and old-timey rotunda in Queens [N.Y.].”
Learned from the book:
• The fountain in center field produces water “fireworks” after Tiger home runs.
• Unlike some parks, which scatter player statues around the stadium, Comerica Park concentrates most of its large metallic likenesses in the left-field pavilion.
• The field incorporates an old-timey dirt path from home plate to the pitcher’s mound. And while that’s not unique (Chase Field in Phoenix was the first modern park with this retro feature), Comerica does have a distinctive plate-shaped dirt area at home plate rather than the usual circle of dirt.
• Comerica leads the majors with its kid-friendly carnival area behind the home plate concourse. The centerpiece is a 50-foot-high Ferris wheel.
