8. 'A Tiger Called Thomas,' by Charlotte Zolotow

A little boy named Thomas moves to "a new house on a new street," and for many days he is too scared to leave his front steps. He's afraid no one will like him. Halloween comes, and Thomas dresses as a little tiger with a mask so no one will recognize him. But his neighbors aren't fooled, and Thomas the tiger is surprised to discover how many friendly people there are who want to be his friend.
