10. 'The Other Typist,' by Suzanne Rindell

This debut novel by Rindell follows police stenographer Rose, who is baffled by society's changing morals as America lives through the 1920s. Rose becomes fascinated by a new secretary, Odalie, who is glamorous and who introduces Rose to the world of speakeasies. Nelson calls this novel "delicious." "People are not who they seem to be," she says of the characters.
