(Coach John Calipari led the University of Kentucky to the 2012 NCAA championship.)
“I don’t talk to my players only about their likely slot in the [NBA] draft but also about what comes after they enter the league. The kids who leave me get guaranteed first-round money, but that does not mean they get a guaranteed spot on an NBA roster. They could end in the NBA’s Development League, commonly called the D League.
“Those franchises are in places like Bakersfield, California; Erie, Pennsylvania; and Boise, Idaho. You’re making money, but in every other regard it’s a step down from playing at Kentucky. Everything here is big time, bright lights. It’s fun, the arenas are packed, the weight room and locker rooms and other facilities are first class. The D League is not that. Our kids have been a little spoiled in Lexington, with chartered jets to road games and so forth. In the D League, you’re traveling commercial, I’ll tell you that. It’s not going to kill them, but it’s probably something they ought to know about.”
