Reader recommendation: Wait for Me!

Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.

Wait for Me! by Deborah Mitford, Duchess of Devonshire, is a wonderful memoir. “Debo,” as she was called, writes of a happy childhood, but also of deaths in World War II, miscarriages, and the disturbing story of her sister Unity. She writes about connections with the Kennedys, the Churchills, Fred and Adele Astaire, and Queen Elizabeth without a tinge of name-dropping. The youngest of the Mitford sisters comes across as a delightful person – one you’d love to have lunch with. Since you can’t, I recommend her book.

Why is Christian Science in our name?

Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Here, you’ll find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences – a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.
