The Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid is a four-cylinder, four-speed automatic transmission sedan that was introduced as a competitor to the Toyota Camry hybrid. It clocks in at 29 miles per gallon city/highway combined.
Or, perhaps we should put that in the past tense.
In June 2009, General Motors announced that it would discontinue this model, citing poor sales and inventory backup. It is part of GM's post-bailout strategy to cut back "on programs and technologies that are expensive and unsuccessful – in the same way that it’s reducing unprofitable brands and dealerships," HybridCars.com writes.
Suffice it to say, Chevy dealerships weren't planning $20,000 markups on the Malibu Hybrid, which was launched amid fanfare at the Major League Baseball All-Star Game in July 2007.
The Malibu is eligible for a $1,500 federal tax credit because Chevrolet has not yet produced 60,000 hybrid vehicles.
