Gas prices put extra strain on consumers, but several strategies can help offset the high price at the pump. Some of these tips give you more mileage from each gallon in your tank, while others tactics might help you simply drive fewer miles.

Combining several errands into one trip pays off in lower gas bills. Several short trips, each from a cold start, can double your fuel use compared with a single trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm, the Energy Department says. Wise planning can also reduce the total distance you drive.

Bicycling, telecommuting, or using public transit can eliminate a car commute.
