Tax day 2011: Last-minute tips to keep the Internal Revenue Service away

Here are nine tips that tax experts (and the friendly Internal Revenue Service itself) offer to help keep you from getting audited, owing a penalty, paying more than you really owe, or having to file an amended return because of a mistake.

5. Consider using IRS Free File

If you want to speed up your refund, don't make the IRS go through this.

This service provides software and electronic filing at no charge for the 70 percent of taxpayers who earn $58,000 or less. You can also e-file through your tax preparer or through commercial software, the IRS says. E-filing should speed a refund.
