If you are new to the world of do-it-yourself auto repair, you might not know what an air filter is, or where it’s located. An air filter is part of your car’s intake system. In order for your car’s engine to operate, it needs a mixture of fuel and air. The air comes in through the intake system, and the air filter helps remove dirt, debris, and particles that might otherwise damage your engine. The filter itself is relatively inexpensive to purchase, so you will save in labor costs by replacing it yourself. On another money-saving note, replacing a clogged air filter may improve fuel economy 2 to 6 percent under normal replacement conditions, or up to 14 percent if the filter is so clogged that it significantly affects drivability.
Easy Factor: The filter box assembly is on top of the engine and easily accessible. Just remove the cover and lift out the filter.
Tip: Location and instructions are shown in the vehicle owner’s manual.
Tool Factor: May need a screwdriver to remove cover of filter box.
Time Factor: Less than 15 minutes.
