2. Determine if you’re ready for a change

Don't look for an offer from another company just to get a better deal with your current employer. Wait until you're ready to move.

Don’t start a job search unless you’re really ready to change companies. Using an offer from another company (particularly a competitor) to get what you want from your current firm is not the way to go. A “power play” against your current employer may backfire, leading to strained relations and downward mobility or put you on the fast track to departure. Move forward if and when you’re ready to make this step.
