Born: Feb. 24, 1955

Parents: Adopted at birth by a Mountain View, Calif., couple, Paul and Clara Jobs. Paul was a machinist, Clara an accountant. Both are deceased. His biological parents – Abdulfattah John Jandali, a Syrian immigrant who became a political science professor and now works at a Nevada casino, and Joanne Schieble, a speech pathologist – gave him up for adoption because, Mr. Jandali said recently, her father wouldn't let them marry. They later did marry and gave birth to Jobs's biological sister, the novelist Mona Simpson.

Education: Graduated in 1972 from Homestead High School in Cupertino, Calif., where he regularly attended lectures after school at Hewlett-Packard. Attended Reed College in Portland, Ore., but dropped out after one semester.

Life experiences: Went on a spiritual retreat to India, studying Buddhism, in the mid-1970s.

Wife: Laurene Powell, whom he met at Stanford University while speaking to a class. They married in 1991.

Children: Four – Lisa (from an earlier relationship), and a son and two daughters with Ms. Powell

Net worth: $8.3 billion (according to Forbes magazine)
