Local San Francisco holiday shoppers check out the new HP ENVY Leap Motion SE and HP Chromebook 14 during an HP Joy Caravan event in San Francisco this past November. The HP Envy 15 is one of this week's best laptop deals.

Coupons rule this week's best laptop deals with codes that slash up to $480 off a variety of machines with the latest Intel processor, starting with the Editors' Choice HP ENVY 15, which packs a quad-core CPU and 8GB of RAM. Hybrid fans can also take $200 off Lenovo's IdeaPad Yoga 2 Pro while Dell's $550 desktop replacement sports the latest hardware without the sticker shock.

(Which tops last week's dual-core CPU.) The 5.6-lb. Editors' Choice laptop also includes 8GB of RAM, a 15.6" 1366x768 LED-backlit LCD, and a 1TB hard drive. Sure, you lose the touch-screen capabilities found in last week's configuration, but you save $250, get a faster processor, and snag free shipping too.

Though we saw it $30 less in November, it's still among the cheapest Z510s we've seen with 8GB of RAM.

  3. Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 2 Pro Intel Haswell Core i7 1.8GHz 13.3" Touchscreen Laptop
    Store: Lenovo
Price: $1,199 via coupon code "YOGA2PRODEAL" with free shipping
    Lowest By: $380

Is It Worth It?: "The Yoga 2 Pro is the most versatile Windows convertible we know of," says Engadget. More importantly, it addresses many of the flaws of the original Yoga while simultaneously being lighter, thinner, and faster. Indeed, one of the Yoga 2 Pro's biggest upgrades is its 13.3" QHD+ 3200x1800 screen. This configuration also includes a Core i7 Haswell dual-core 1.8GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. At 3.1 lbs., the folks at PC Mag believe it's too heavy for prolonged use as a tablet, but call it an otherwise attractive gift for early adopters and graphics arts mavens.

Is It Worth It?: Although it's the heaviest laptop in our roundup this week, the 7.3-lb. Dell Inspiron 17 doesn't lack anything in the specs department. Housing a Core i5 1.6GHz dual-core Haswell CPU, the laptop features a 17.3" 1600x900 LED-backlit LCD, 6GB RAM, and a 750GB hard drive. Sure, we've seen cheaper configurations of this laptop, but this model packs better-than-average specs.

What is the Monitor difference? Tackling the tough headlines – with humanity. Listening to sources – with respect. Seeing the story that others are missing by reporting what so often gets overlooked: the values that connect us. That’s Monitor reporting – news that changes how you see the world.

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

If you’re looking for bran muffin journalism, you can subscribe to the Monitor for $15. You’ll get the Monitor Weekly magazine, the Monitor Daily email, and unlimited access to CSMonitor.com.
