Toys R Us will let you trade in your old baby gear for a discount

Toys R Us is hosting its tenth annual 'Great Trade-In' for the next month, allowing parents to trade in aging and potentially dangerous baby equipment for a 25 percent store discount. Toys R US says that the age and condition of the items do not matter.

Need to upgrade from a crib to a toddler bed? Or maybe the stroller you inherited from your sister was made under a different set of safety standards than we've got today. You can trade it in at Toys R Us in exchange for a 25% discount on select new baby gear. 

Toys R Us will host its 10th "Great Trade-In" event from Friday 1/23 through Saturday 2/21 at Toys R Us and Babies R Us locations nationwide. The event is meant to help parents and caregivers replace aging and potentially dangerous baby equipment (and get it out of circulation), though parents merely seeking an upgrade from what they have are also welcome.

The age and condition of the item does not matter. Toys R Us noted that they've taken items that are decades old, missing parts, or that are otherwise defective - and getting this old, worn and broken gear out of circulation is exactly the reason why they host this event in the first place.

"The Great Trade-In was conceived to bring attention to the dangers associated with potentially unsafe used items in circulation, and we’re proud this program has to-date helped remove more than 1 million items from the marketplace," said Hank Mullany, President, Toys R Us, U.S. "One of our most important responsibilities as a company is to help parents keep kids safe, and we look forward to once again hosting this popular event in our stores to encourage families to turn in old products in exchange for new ones in-line with today’s safety standards."

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”
