'Ground Zero mosque': What's your view?

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission voted today to deny landmark status to a building near the former World Trade Center. The decision paves the way for the construction of a new Islamic community center, which will also house a mosque, near Ground Zero.

Emotions have been running high over the proposed center.

Leading conservative political figures such as Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich have opposed construction.

Mr. Gingrich, while recognizing that there are more than 100 mosques already in New York City, said, "There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia."

For its part, the Cordoba Initiative says it "aims to achieve a tipping point in Muslim-West relations within the next decade, steering the world back to the course of mutual recognition and respect and away from heightened tensions."
