The second Death Star had improved targeting systems that allowed it to use its super-laser to blow up not just planets, but individual spaceships. But even that technological terror has nothing on the death ray developed by scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, which targets and vaporizes mosquitoes.
Designed to control malaria, the system first targets the insect with a nonlethal laser, which reads the bug's wing-beat pattern to determine if it is a mosquito, and, if so, whether it is a male or female (females are the ones who bite). If it's yes on both, then the lethal laser is given permission to shoot.
