Why is an alien in a TV show about stone-age humans?

The Great Gazoo was a little, green man exiled to Earth after running amok on his home planet. First appearing in 1965, the final season of the Flintstones, Gazoo is a classic example of a TV show "jumping the shark," or writers running out of good ideas and reaching for the ridiculous.
