Twitter timeline down? It's not just you.

Update: at 3:27 ET Twitter posted the following update: This issue has been resolved and timelines are updating normally once again.
Has the world screeched to a halt? Nope.
But confused Twitter users can't be blamed for asking – the microblogging site has confirmed that it's having difficulties with its timeline updating. In other words, we're tweeting to ourselves.
Word of the outage came from the official Twitter status monitor, which told visitors "We are currently investigating a problem causing many users’ timelines to be delayed. We will update with status here shortly." The site isn't exactly down, as downforeveryoneorjustme tells us – it's just not updating.
Twitter, of course, is no stranger to downtime, displaying the infamous fail whale when it can't keep up with demand, but today's outage is something this tweeter hasn't seen before.
Recent outages of some of the Web's premiere properties point to an Internet experiencing growing pains – when user numbers spike or maintenance is required, services often can't keep up. Remember how AOL turned into "America on Hold" in the mid 90s? Google News, Craigslist, Gmail, and Twitter have all dealt with this problem recently, and now it's Twitter again.
We'll update this post when everything's back to normal in Twitterville, but until then, enjoy this video from Billy Idol and one seriously cute baby.
