Trees and shrubs that tolerate black walnut roots

You may have heard that the roots of black walnut trees contain a chemical that keep other plants nearby from growing. But not all plants are affected. If you have black walnuts, these are shrubs and trees that typically will tolerate living close to black walnut trees: beauty bush, variegated euonymus, juniper, hawthorn, bigleaf hydrangea, lilac, black locust, mock orange, and Norway spruce.
