Founded in 1945 in New York, the United Nations has spearheaded operations ranging from peacekeeping to human rights to the promotion of economic and social development. Beginning his career with the UN in 1962, Kofi Annan served as Secretary General from 1997-2006.

The UN and Mr. Annan were given the nod “for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.”
