Shirin Ebadi was the first female judge in Iran. She served as a judge from 1969 until 1979, when after the Iranian Revolution, women were no longer allowed to serve as judges. After obtaining a lawyer’s license in 1992, Ms. Ebadi defended and advocated for journalists, mothers, and children among others.
Ebadi’s Peace Prize was “for her efforts for democracy and human rights. She has focused especially on the struggle for the rights of women and children.”
