Last weekend, Cain, hot on the campaign trail, teasingly told supporters in Tennessee that the US could benefit from a structure similar to the Great Wall of China.
“It will be a 20-foot wall, barbed wire, electrified on the top.... And I would put those alligators in that moat!”
The “alligators in the moat” idea referenced a tongue-in-cheek comment President Obama made while speaking on immigration reform in Texas in May. “They’ll want a higher fence. Maybe they’ll need a moat. Maybe they’ll want alligators in the moat. They’ll never be satisfied,” Mr. Obama said.
Cain later said the quote was in jest, and he responded to critics with another one-liner, “America has got to learn how to take a joke.”
