U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., announces his retirement on Feb 10, 2011. Kyl was elected to the Senate in 1994, and plans on remaining in office until his term runs out in Jan. 2013.

Not since 1994 have Arizonans seen an election with an open Senate seat, but that's what they'll have with Senator Kyl’s departure. Pundits say possible candidates are Republican US Rep. Jeff Flake and Democratic Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Kyl, the Senate minority whip, was elected to the Senate in 1994.
