Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown has outpolled Republican businessman Larry Hogan by as much as 12 points in the open race to replace Gov. Martin O’Malley (D). But the race has tightened in the closing weeks of the campaign in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than 2 to 1. Voters in a recent Washington Post poll-University of Maryland poll cite taxes as their No. 1 concern and say they trust Hogan to do a better job handling the issue by an 11-point margin. On Friday, the Cook Political Report shifted the Maryland governor's race to toss-up.
