The Fox News commentator got taken to task over his comments, immediately following Ann Romney’s speech, that she sounded like a “corporate wife” and that she didn’t convince him that she understood the struggles of American women.
“The stories she told about struggle … it’s hard for me to believe,” Mr. William said. “She’s a very rich woman, and I know that and America knows that.”
Innocuous enough – and Williams was surely not the only person to respond that way to Mrs. Romney’s attempt to talk about the price at the pump, single dads, working moms, and parents who are lying awake at night “wondering how they'll be able to pay the mortgage or make the rent.”
But his “corporate wife” characterization, apparently, went over the top. Fellow commentators and twitterers jumped on him.
“What’s with Juan William’s War on Women?” tweeted Dennis Miller, while conservative commentator Michelle Malkin was even harsher. “Ann Romney = Class, Juan Williams = [rhyming expletive],” she tweeted.
Of course, some of the conservatives jumping on Williams now are the same ones who defended him two years ago when NPR fired Williams for his statements about feeling nervous when he sees people in “Muslim garb” getting on airplanes.
