Martha Stewart served five months in federal prison before beginning five months of house arrest at her Bedford, NY home.

Ms. Stewart, who was convicted of crimes relating to insider trading, was allowed to leave her house for 48 hours per week to buy groceries, go to doctors appointments, or attend religious or work-related events. The time she was unable to leave was “hideous,” she told Vanity Fair magazine.

High press scrutiny sometimes caused trouble with her parole officers. After the New York Post reported that Stewart had attended yoga classes and jetted around her 153-acre estate in an off-road vehicle, her home confinement was extended by three weeks.

Stewart rid herself of her ankle bracelet, which she complained irritated her skin, on August 31, 2005.
