Clifford Harris, better known as the rapper T.I., was charged with purchasing machine guns outside of the BET Hip-Hop Awards in October 2007. He was released on a $3 million bond and confined to his home pending trial. Only his girlfriend and children were allowed to reside with him, and all visitors required court approval and a background check. Harris could leave only for court appearances or medical appointments, though in 2008 he received permission to attend an Easter service, where he gave a three-minute address about HIV/AIDS to the congregation of 30,000 people.
While under house arrest, he was stripped of his passport, ordered to wear an ankle bracelet, and forbidden from drinking alcohol.
In March 2009, Harris was sentenced to one year in prison. He began serving the sentence in May.
