[Updated July 2, 2015] On July 2, 2015, former Senator Webb of Virginia announced he's running for president.
Before his time in the Senate, Webb was decorated for his Marine combat service in Vietnam, was secretary of the Navy under President Reagan, and is a best-selling author and filmmaker. Notably outspoken, he made a name for himself in politics when he narrowly beat Republican Sen. George Allen in 2006.
After one term, he declined to run for reelection. In a Sept. 23, 2014, speech at the National Press Club, Webb, a former Republican, touted his ability to work across the aisle. He also reasserted his partisan affiliation, saying he has “strong reasons for being a Democrat.”
"Basically if you want true fairness in society, you want to give a voice in the corridors of power for the people who otherwise would not have it, I believe that will come from the Democratic Party,” Webb said.
Webb has been doing small campaign events with voters in early primary and caucus states, but so far, his candidacy has not garnered much public attention.
