[Updated Oct. 26] If Senator Levin were running for reelection, the seat would be safely Democratic. But he’s not, and that injected some uncertainty into the race up front. Rep. Gary Peters, the Democratic nominee, ran into campaign problems early on and national Democrats retooled his team. He has also had to build a statewide profile outside his congressional district.
Former Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land, the Republican nominee, already had a statewide profile, and was a strong fundraiser. But she’s a conservative Republican running in a Democratic-leaning state, and has not been a strong campaigner. Polls show Congressman Peters consistently ahead, outside the margin of error.
Cook rates this one lean Democrat. Rothenberg calls it Democrat favored, and Sabato calls it likely Democrat.
