VCU beat: (11) Southern California, 59-46; (6) Georgetown, 74-56; (3) Purdue, 94-76
FSU beat: (7) Texas A&M, 57-50; (2) Notre Dame, 71-57
Winner plays: winner of (12) Richmond vs. (1) Kansas
VCU is the only team with three wins on its tournament resume, and the Rams didn’t have any apparent trouble with any of its more prominent opponents, beating progressively higher-seeded competition by a combined 49 points. Outside shooting and free throws have been the difference for the Rams; against Georgetown and Purdue, they made a combined 20 of 46 3-point attempts (that’s better than 43 percent) and shot better than 71 percent from the free throw line (38 of 53). Not bad for a team that was considered by many to be a controversial choice on Selection Sunday.
FSU, a surprise in the Sweet Sixteen in its own right, steamrolled a highly-seeded opponent of its own last week in Notre Dame. In that game, the Seminoles lit it up from 3-point range, shooting over 47 percent (better than their overall field goal percentage).
