Joe Louis helped America through the Great Depression by winning consistently. 'The Brown Bomber' became heavyweight champion in 1937 when he defeated James J. Braddock. Perhaps his greatest victory came at the expense of German Max Schmeling, whom Louis knocked out in the first round at Yankee Stadium in 1938. Many boxing observers also considered a 1941 defeat of Billy Conn equally important. Louis holds the record for longest reign as champion at 11 years with 25 successful title defenses.
