Both the Spurs and Thunder franchises were founded the same year – 1967 – but not in the cities they currently occupy or using their current names. The Spurs began their existence as the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association, beating the NBA’s arrival in Texas by four years .
The Chaparrals did poorly at the box office, drawing only 134 fans for their final game in Dallas before moving to San Antonio and renaming themselves the Spurs in 1973. Three years later, the Spurs and three other ABA teams (Nuggets, Pacers, and Nets) joined the NBA.
The Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics until team owner Clay Bennett moved the club to Oklahoma City in 2008 after he couldn’t work out a deal with Seattle for a new arena. He had to pay Seattle $75 million to settle a lawsuit meant to block the move.
Oklahoma City represented an attractive alternative given the strong support for the NBA between 2005 and 2007 when the league temporarily relocated the New Orleans Hornets to Oklahoma City while New Orleans was rebuilding after hurricane Katrina.
