NFL draft: Will coveted No. 1 choice achieve pro greatness?

Leading up to the National Football League's annual draft of college talent April 26-27, speculation swirls about who will be the No. 1 choice. Many draft-watchers anticipate the Miami Dolphins, who pick first as the result of having last season's worst record (1-15), will select Jake Long, a 6 ft., 7 in., 315-lb. offensive lineman from the University of Michigan. Other possibilities: Glenn Dorsey of Louisiana State, a defensive tackle, and Darren McFadden, a running back from Arkansas. As good as the No. 1 pick may be, there's no guarantee his career will lead to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which has inducted only 12 top selections since the inception of the draft in 1936. The Hall of Famers who went first in the NFL draft, the year each was inducted, with his college position and school:

1942: Bill Dudley (RB) Virginia
1945: Charley Trippi (RB) Georgia
1949: Chuck Bednarik (C/LB) Pennsylvania
1957: Paul Hornung (QB) Notre Dame
1963: Buck Buchanan* (DT) Grambling
1968: Ron Yary (OT) Southern California
1969: O.J. Simpson (RB) Southern California
1970: Terry Bradshaw (QB) Louisiana Tech
1976: Lee Roy Selmon (DE) Oklahoma
1978: Earl Campbell (RB) Texas
1983: John Elway (QB) Stanford
1989: Troy Aikman (QB) UCLA
