The story of David Hartley, who was allegedly shot by Mexican drug traffickers Sept. 30 while jet-skiing on a lake that straddles Texas and Mexico, has received continuous coverage in American news.
If anything, reckons political analyst Dan Lund of The Mund Group, the Falcon Lake case contributes to the feeling that Mexico is being covered sensationally by the US media.
“This couple has been adopted as the poster couple for [sensationalist] news,” he says. “It does not make them more sympathetic. [Mexicans feel] they are using it to beat up on Mexico … and to stoke fear.”
